Areas of activity | Transparency and good governance
GPA offers analysis and advice to develop best practice on good governance, transparency and access to information.
UNDP
GPA worked with the Oslo based governance division of UNDP in their development of an access to information programme. In the first instance GPA produced a technical guidance note on access to information which was distributed to all UNDP offices. This was followed up by the production of a set of indicators enabling the offices to assess the effectiveness of UNDP programmes. Andrew Puddephatt was subsequently invited to become an expert advisor to the governance division of UNDP. More recently GPA provided training for Afghan public officials and members of the Afghan parliament. GPA have also been asked to produce an online training module for UNDP staff on transparency and the right to information.
Codelco
GPA was asked to assist the Chilean state owned copper company Codelco develop its policy on corporate social governance. GPA produced a background paper examining the international experience of CSR and the development of CSR standards. GPA also helped organise a major international seminar in Santiago, Chile on corporate governance. The conference involved several hundred local participants assisted by twenty international experts and examined the challenges of implementing CSR in the modern world. [link to Codelco web-site]
Policy Network/Africa Institute
Global Partners provided co-ordination and strategic advice for a Johannesburg conference on the future of politics in Africa, working with Policy Network in London, the Africa Institute in Johannesburg and the office of South African President Thabo Mbeki. The conference brought together around 150 politicians from around Africa to discuss themes such as governance, economic management and progressive values in the context of African politics.
Nirex
With the support of Nirex, the UK's statutory nuclear waste company, GPA is developing a methodology for analysing corporate transparency. This will involve producing a set of benchmarks and a method of assessing compliance with those benchmarks. A sample exercise will be conducted on companies where there is a significant public interest. Results are expected in March 2007. Nirex is currently being absorbed into the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
CEPS (Chilean Socialist Party)
Following the election of Michele Bachelet as President, the Chilean Socialist Party is organising a conference in March 2007 which will assess the social and economic challenges for Latin America, and the possible policy responses for progressive politicians. GPA is working with Policy Network in London to provide an analysis of the issues and advice on the content and themes of the conference.
British Council India
GPA was asked to conduct a strategic analysis of the British Council's governance work in India. GPA worked with the British Council's offices in Delhi and Mumbai, and met with stakeholders in the UK and India to evaluate the impact of their current activities and define the emerging issues for governance in India. The final report provided a framework for future activity, highlighting themes around which to maximise impact and recommending strategic partners for the development of their governance work.
